Quest: Inn of the Forsaken: Stroke of Midnight

This level 20 quest from Anlaf, the proprietor of the Forgotten Inn in the Western part of the Lone-lands, unlocks access to the instance.

Ah, good...you look to be the adventurous sort! I have a problem that I was hoping you might assist me with. It seems that some of the patrons have been complaining of terrible wailing noises coming from the walls and floor in the basement. I'm sure it's nothing, but business hasn't been great lately what with the rumours that the inn is haunted!

Now, I'm too busy to waste my time on hogwash like that myself, but perhaps you might be interested in taking a look? If naught else, you could confirm that it's a rumour and nothing more...

I should warn you, though, the customers don't normally start complaining about the noises until about midnight, so you'll probably have to hang around here until then. I'll even throw in as much ale as you can drink to help you pass the time!

An Incantation Stone -- click for larger size

Next Objective

  • Talk to Anlaf about the free ale

Excellent! You'll help? Fine, fine...ah, right, the free ale? Once I start to pour it, time will just waste away and before you know it, it will be midnight! Just sit back and enjoy...

Note: This instance is free to VIP members, but FREE and PREMIUM members must first purchase it.

Class Selection

To complete the Challenge, you must pick one class from each of the following categories.

  • Lore-master, Minstrel, Rune-keeper -- a "lore" class -- uses incantation stones and strange runes
  • Captain, Hunter, Burglar -- an "aware" class -- triggers trap mechanisms
  • Guardian, Warden, Champion -- a "brawn" class -- smashes through broken walls

Incantation Stones

Incantation stones usually have some sort of incantation or written spell inscribed on their surface in runic form. When read aloud, these incantations can have incredible effects! Based on my translation of the runes on these incantation stones, these appear to have been created to ward off the Dead. Unfortunately, like th runed plaques, only someone trained in the lore of runes such as a lore-master, rune-keeper, or minstrel can possibly read these incantations...

These stun undead in the room for a few seconds. You cannot keep them permamezzed with this, there will be a few seconds when the stone is on cooldown and the undead are active before you can use it again.

Undead bone-piles are the reanimated bones of the long-dead. I have had a chance to witness these terrible things in the past, and to my recollection, they will endlessly create skeletons until the pile itself is destroyed. Unfortunately, they are highly resistant to tactical and ranged attacks, and so must be dealt with hand-to-hand. I wish I could be of more help...

Undead bone-piles will spawn two skeletons. When a skeleton is destroyed, another will spawn.

Note: in case you missed that, the bone piles really need Melee damage if you want to burn them down fast.

Trap Mechanisms

A Trap Mechanism -- click for larger size

Trap mechanisms are exposed portions of the inner workings of nearby traps. I find it is easy to determine the location of a trap mechanism by listening for the sound of moving gears. If you were an 'aware' class such as s burglar, captain, or hunter, you might be able to figure out a way to temporarily disable them...

Riddle Doors

Riddle Door -- click for larger size

Riddle doors are doors which only open upon solving a riddle. First, you must read the inscription on the door...this will give you a hint as to how you can open it. These particular types of riddle doors are fascinating as they do not accept spoken passwords as other riddle doors do. Instead, these doors seem to star at you...very unsettling indeed! It is almost like they are waiting for you 'emote' the answer to their riddle...

Note: Emotes can be typed by hand or acessed through the dropdown menu on your chat bar (click the chat bubble to the left of the text parser). If you fail an emote three times, a new random riddle will be chosen. There is a deed for answering all 83 riddles correctly.

Suspicious Walls

Suspicious Wall -- click for larger size

There are two suspicious walls which lead to some extra things -- the first leads to a trap mechanism and some bone piles, the second leads to the 4th page of the Journal. They must first be discovered by the corresponding Strange Rune plaque, then a champion/guardian/warden can smash through the broken wall.

Sarcophagus Hallway

One hallway is lined with sarcophagi. Each sarcophagus contains a bone pile which must be destroyed to complete the challenge. Behind each bone pile is a lever. A scroll at the beginning of the hallway tells you which three levers need to be pulled in order to advance (the required three levers is random each time). There are two gates out of this hallway; which one opens depends on the difficulty tier.

Umín

Inscription stone on the West of the ship, trap pressure plate on the North and South of the ship, two trap mechanisms. The South pressure plate triggers the upward spikes, the North plate triggers the spinning trap.
  • "Now stand still so I can stomp you!" - AoE daze, interrupt this.
  • "I'll pound you into dust!'" - Punches through the floorboards, getting stuck for a few seconds.
  • "Here, let me lend you a hand!" - double hand slap, performed if AoE daze is successful.
  • 1st stage -- straightforward DPS, keeping the above attacks in mind.
  • 2nd stage -- Basically the same as 2nd stage Fil Gashan. He has a damage shield that makes him almost entirely immune to damage. In order to lower his shield, you have to maneuver him over a spike pit and wait for him to use his pound attack and get stuck in the floor (don't interrupt it), then use the South pressure plate to activate the spikes.
    • While his shield is down, if you trigger the inscription stone when he's standing near it, he'll take extra damage.
    • At the end of this stage, he will leave combat mode and attempt to heal in the center of the ship. You must trigger the spinning trap (North trigger) to knock him over and end it, or he will recover and continue to fight.

This is the end of the instance on Tier 1. On Tier 2, the walkways will retract when you try to leave the ship and the spirit of the necklace will leave Umín to attack you on its own.

Spirit of the Necklace (Tier 2 only)

  • The spirit moves back and forth between the two pressure plates, making the center of the ship a dangerous place to stay. The nearby trap mechanisms will disable these hazards temporarily, but you can hug the perimeter of the ship to avoid walking through any traps.
    • After losing enough morale he'll start opening sarcophagi and triggering bone piles. There are four on the South side of the ship and four on the North side of the ship. If you get close within melee range of him from this point on, he'll let off an AoE.
    • To complete the Challenge, you must allow him to open all 8 sarcophagi before killing him, or you will be unable to destroy every bone pile.

Note: Neither the bosses nor the bone piles may have a fellowship maneuver started on them, but you can start one on the skeletons that spawn from the bone piles.

Rewards

It's possible to obtain up to 3 chests per run:

  • Wood Chest - For completing the instance
  • Fancy Gold Chest - For defeating the Spirit of the Necklace (requires Tier 2)
  • Small Fancy Chest - For completing the Challenge quest (requires Tier 2 and a well-balanced fellowship)
    • Use every Trap Mechanism at least once
    • Use all 3 Incantation Stones
    • Use both Suspicious Walls
    • Destroy every bone pile, including all the ones in the hall of sarcophagi (you got to open each sarcophagi) and all the ones on the ship, inclduing the ones in the tombs (the tombs open one by one when you are fighting the boss, so to destroy all thse bone piles, you can not kill the boss fast, you got to kite untill all the tombs opened).

There is no guaranteed drop for Inn of the Forsaken marks, but each chest has a chance to award one.

Seventh of April, 1351

We discovered a cave two days ago as we returned from our raid upon the treasuries of Rhostham. Khedem fell into a hole in some loose soil and broke his leg. We splinted the wound and cleared out the entrance. The cavern beneath us is vast, and seems to go on for miles.

Ninth of April

After some spirited debate, which ended with a few lost teeth and one cracked skull, we took a vote and decided to move our base to these new caves. It lies near a major trade route and will keep us hidden when the king's men come sniffing about.

Thirtieth of April

At last, the gang has finished moving our gear below ground. It troubles me that others might discover the cave mouth as we did, though. Perhaps we can build something on top of the entrance to disguise its purpose.

Fifteenth of July

The entrance to the cavern has been sealed beneath a wooden house. Tawult, our tinker, has fashioned an intricate secret door to gain entrance. It should be nigh impossible for interlopers to discover these caverns now!

Fourth of August

We almost lost Shutet today. Whilst digging in the caverns, the floor collapsed under him and he plunged headfirst down some kind of underground water channel that emptied out into an enormous cave. After he crawled back to us, he claimed he felt fresh air, but he took a rap on the head so he may be mistaken. Tunon will investigate tomorrow.

Page 2

Sixth of August

Tunon confirmed it: Shutet's waterway flows out to the Hoarwell! This means we can moor a boat in the cave, away from prying eyes. These caverns are turning out to be the best hideout we could have hoped for.

Twenty-fifth of August

The men grow restive. With all our work in the caverns we've been neglecting out thievery. If I don't find a new target soon, they're likely to go off on their own -- and they know where these caves are. Can't have that, so tomorrow Shabej and I set off for Minas Weriol to scout our next mark.

Third of September

I cannot believe our luck! Shabaj overheard some nobles talking about a delivery of jewels in a week's time. We've already begun our preparations. These rich labyrinths won't know what hit them.

Tenth of September

Success! the lads did their jobs, and did them without flaw. We've stowed the goods within the caverns. One of the marks got away, but not before I snatched the necklace he was hiding. Gave him a good scar to remember me by, too. He won't soon forget the face of Captain Rabghul!

The necklace is very old, with a silver pendant set with a large ruby. I've decided not to tell the men about it. After all, I found it myself.

Page 3

Fifteenth of September

I feel renewed when I don the necklace. I can't explain it, but it is as if its mere touch brings fresh strength coursing through my veins. I feel like I can do anything while I'm wearing it.

Twenty-first of September

I have removed the necklace for now. I fear it was beginning to affect my judgement. Last week I flew into a rage when Rubej told me he'd heard talk in town of putting together a search party to track us down. I hurled him against the wall and nearly broke his back. The bauble, it seems, fuels my anger as well as giving me strength. Even so, I cannot bring myself to get rid of it. It is too dear to me.

Third of October

I fear the gang is growing leery of me. The search party has been afield for more than a week, and we've been lying low in the caverns. All this time in close quarters has told upon us all. Yesterday I caught Khedem in my quarters, rummaging through my things. I bloodied his nose to teach him his place. I don't think he saw the necklace, but it was a near thing. I don't know what I would have done if he took it...

Seventeenth of October

The lads are plotting to take the necklace. I am sure of it. I heard Tunon and Bughed whispering to each other, then they got quiet when I walked by. The lot of them eye me when they think I'm not looking. I am sure of it. I must protect it. I will defend it however I can. I should start wearing it again, to keep it safe.

Page 4

Twenty-eighth of October

They're all dead. The lads. I had a terrible nightmare that they were crying out in pain, and awoke to find their bodies strewn about the caverns like boughs after a storm. Blood everywhere. I don't know what happened. Last night was just like every other night - I put the necklace on and slept in the corner with one eye on the door, just to be sure. I don't understand. It doesn't make sense. Who killed them?

Six of Novembre

I've buried them all. I had to. The way they looked at me with their cold, dead eyes ... it's as if they BLAMED me. But I didn't do it! I would remember if I did. Wouldn't I? No ... they must have carved each other up squabbling over who would get the necklace - after they TOOK it from me! Well, I'm GLAD they're dead. Now at least my precious jewel will be safe!

Twelveth Novembre

Flashes. Memories? I see myself, holding an axe. The faces of my crew ... horrified, then broken. Blood, blood. The necklace ... pulsing, pounding at my chest. It made me do it. IT MADE ME. But I love it any way. No one can change that.

Nine

I miss them. I do. It's so lonely here. Just me and my thoughts. And my pretty necklace. I do love it, I do. It doesn't judge me. It is my one companion and friend. It would never lead me astray.

Page 5

I Believe it is February

Voices above. Footsteps. They came then left again.
They have found my home. Soon they'll find the caves ... and they'll come to take it back.
My necklace.
Well. THEY CAN'T HAVE IT!!!
I shall build defenses. I need to protect it. To keep it SAFE.

Spring has Come

Traps! Traps EVERYWHERE! They will DIE if they set foot in my HOME. The necklace tells me I should do MORE ... I MUST protect it BETTER. It asks for things ... it wants MORE HELP. Yes. An army of its own. It told me how. I know the secret!

Next Day

They LIVE again! My lads! Yes. My lovely necklace has brought them BACK to me! They don't speak a word, but they WORK ... oh, they all work SO hard. Yes! MUCH harder than BEFORE. It is like a dream A BEAUTIFUL DREAM

---

Something has happened. Yes the lads TURNED on me AGAIN. I thought they were my FRIENDS but yesterday Khedem tried to GRAB me and yes today Tunon BIT my ARM. I know WHY. Yes. They want the necklace. Yes they ALL do YES. But they won't HAVE it. I won't LET them. Yes I put it AWAY where THEY can't find it. I will keep it SAFE. Yes and I will lock MYSELF in so the lads LEAVE ME ALONE!!!

---

My fault. Why they came back to me, if all they want is eating? WHY? Don't KNOW! Wasn't I GOOD to them? NOW. I am TRAPPED here my self. WITHOUT MY NECKLACE! Yes. I HAVE LOST IT! Banging on door. I here there BONES scrapping aganst the WALLS. I am felling so weak, to week to rite

---

all is silent the end is near. only thing left is to sleep. necklace has betrayed me no reason to live

---

IN THE DARK I BLEED WITH MY AXE
YES
MY FRIENDS HAVE COME THEY WILL NOT HAVE ME
SO HEAVY TASTES LIKE IRON IN MY MOUTH
