Skills and Abilities

The Captain receives a wide variety of skills of all types. Mastering the use of these skills is key to playing a Captain well.

On-Defeat Reactives

Captains get on-defeat skills that can only be used after:

These skills are:

  1. Rallying Cry (lvl 1): Heals your fellowship over time, when traited your fellowship will also receive power over time.
  2. War Cry (lvl 4) : Gives your fellowship a - attack speed buff
  3. Routing Cry (lvl 8): Light damage to nearby enemies
  4. Shadow's Lament (lvl 60): Powerful Melee attack with extra threat

When to use all these skills is up to the player to decide. War Cry is mainly a dps boost, Rallying Cry is obviously a heal (and a pretty nice one, I might add). Shadow's Lament is great for tanking (especially with the legendary trait).

There are some traits that enhance these skills, these are: Captain of War for War-Cry, Now for Wrath for Rallying Cry, Turn the Tide for Routing Cry and Master of War for Shadow's Lament (note that this is a legendary trait).

Marks

The Marks

The captain gets three marks,

  1. Telling Mark : Increases the damage that you and your companions do by 5%.
  2. Noble Mark : Damage over time as well as increased Threat.
  3. Revealing Mark : Heals anybody damaging the target, returning 15% of the damage dealt as healing.

Telling mark and Revealing mark are the 2 marks you are gonna use the most, if you have 2 captain in your group then you can put both on a target (different marks from different captains stack). If you are the only captain then you will have to decide if you go for speed (telling) or safety (revealing).

Noble mark is mainly used for pulling since it is one of the few captain skills that works from range. It is also used to keep a bit of aggro while kiting a mob.

Heralds and Standards

Heralds are pets that fight for you and that provide you and your group with buffs, there are 3 types of buffs.

  1. Herald of War : Might and Agility Bonus
  2. Herald of Hope : Morale bonus and ICMR
  3. Herald of Victory : Power bonus and ICPR

You can use armaments to change the appearance and strength of your herald or you can equip banners to plant a banner instead of summoning  a herald. Banners give the same buffs as heralds, although the buffs are slightly better since banners have a level equal to yours where heralds are 2 levels lower then you. Slotting a banner also gives you some extra stats to compensate for the loss of your companion.

There is also an archer herald that does not provide buffs but does some more dps (although some testing has shown that you can do more dps with a banner of war slotted).

Captain Builds

There are, as with any class, numerous different ways to build out a Captain with traits. Listed below are some that are popular within the community.

DPS/Critical-Cry Build

This build seeks to maximize the Captain's potential for doing damage to enemies. To that end, it focuses on maximizing Might, Agility, and Critical chance. To view this build, see Mechanics:Captain Build (DPS or Critical Cry).
