[edit] Prologue:
This compendium is a compilation of notes from a journal found on the remains of what appeared to be an Elven Ranger by the name of Elfar. The journal was entitled "Elfar’s Emote Compendium – The expressions, mannerisms, and oddities of the Peoples and Creatures of Middle Earth (as observed by me during my travels).”
The inscription quoted above was written on the inside cover along with a reference to a Ring which was in the same prose. There are a few strange references within it that I have yet to reconcile - 1) I have not been able to locate this 'Adder' to whom he refers (it is purely coincidental that I share the same name). 2) I have absolutely no idea who these 'virtual toons' are nor where they hail from. 3) The 'puter throne' is a mystery as I can find no other reference to this in Middle Earth. I am assuming by its use that it must be a magical throne of some kind. 4) And last, 'land of the Web' obviously must be located amongst the terrible spiders of Middle Earth, but these 'pixels' must be a rare species because, again, I can find no reference to them in all of Middle Earth.
Being acquainted to his half-brother – Tarelphar – I was commissioned to use Elfar’s notes along with Tarelphar & Company’s recent knowledge of this subject to write this Compendium. For accuracy of detail, and for posterity, it should be noted that Elfar’s remains were found in a small crevice leading from a strange but wondrous place called ‘The Forums’. This dark crevice, when followed with much difficulty and trepidation, led directly to none other than (I loathe to even utter it) the fiery post-thread incinerators of Mt. Turbine itself!!
[edit] Introduction
Emotes are a form of self-expression allowing players’ characters to perform a wide variety of actions accompanied with a description (often with an animation and occasionally an audio enhancement), usually not directly related to the slaughtering of the minions of evil (or good) nor to the running of the myriad quests and objectives of gameplay. Emotes (and in LOTRO, Moods) are viewed by some to be gaming fluff while others (especially Roleplayers) consider them to be an essential and often crucial ingredient to play-style in any MMORPG. Regardless of where you fit in, Emotes have become a standard that makes the gaming world more realistic (hopefully) and much more fun and enjoyable.
Our world of Middle Earth in LOTRO is no exception. We began with an admirable list of Emotes at launch, and over the last fifteen months more have been added during the many updates giving us well over one-hundred emotes! So I’ll begin this compendium with a primer on how to use these Emotes, followed by the current list of Emotes and Moods that everyone can access. (Note the emphasis on everyone. There are some Emotes in LOTRO that require the completion of certain tasks to access them. These will be explained as we get deeper into this compendium).
[edit] Conventions used thoughout this Compendium:
NOTE - I am in the process of a major format update as noted at the start of the Compendium. If you find inconsistencies in what is indicated below with the actual article, they are temporary and will be corrected within the next day or so.
- Many emotes have an animation which your character performs. These are indicated with an (An) [the new animations added with Book 14 are (An^)]
- Some emotes have audio attached to the action. These are indicated with an (Au).
- While most emotes are performed once and then stop, some are persistent. These persistent emotes will continue until you perform another action, use a skill, or cancel it. The persistent emotes are indicated with a (P) .
- I have capitalized the emotes within the lists for emphasis and conformity. Capitalizing is NOT necessary when typing an emote.
- All of the Emote descriptions (except /AFK) are followed by four lines:
- This is the message you see if you have yourself or nothing targeted.
- This is the message you see with someone or something targeted.
- This is the message others see if you have yourself or nothing targeted.
- This is the message others see with someone or something targeted.
- Comment-notes relevant to some degree are this color.
- Descriptive &/or explanatory notes are this color.
- Examples are this color.
- Comments pertaining to animation are this color and italisized.
- Comments pertaining to audio are this color and italisized.
- All notes pertaining to animation or audio that are shared by more than one emote are in this color.
- All of my mostly irrelevant, commented observations are in this color and italisized.
[edit] Using Emotes and Moods
[edit] General Usage:
Notes:
- Emotes may be used at anytime, anywhere, except while crafting.
- Weapons disappear when crafting, playing music, and when doing most emotes. Some emotes will still show the weapons when appropriate.
- Book 14 added 3 (NEW) emotes and added animation to 12 existing emotes (An^)!
Emotes can be used ingame by either typing the slash (/) commands as listed below or by using the list found in the Chat-line menu. The menu is by far the easiest but cannot be customized with your own text (more on customizing in a moment). To use the menu, simply click the chat bubble (on the left of the chat input bar) and select Emotes from the menu. A list will popup with the option More Emotes at the bottom. Clicking each of the More Emotes will eventually give you eight boxes of emotes totaling one-hundred-four (104) Emotes and eleven (11) Moods (as you acquire special emotes, they are added to your list). A few Emotes are not included in the menu list (/AFK is one of these), so for these, the slash command must be typed. For those that are on the list, simply click your desired Emote or Mood and your character will perform that action along with a descriptive text in the chat window. You have just performed an Emote!
If the stock text isn’t to your liking or you just want to make a special Emote for certain occasions, then you will have to type the Emote into the chat bar. To make your custom Emote, type /e, /em, /me, or /emote and add whatever text you wish. These text Emotes do no have an action nor audio with them, but outputs a simple text emote in chat.
- Example: /e belches loudly after downing the entire mug of ale. Nearby players would see ‘<Your name> belches loudly after downing the entire mug of ale.’ (and then everyone would move to the other end of the tavern).
All of the predefined Emotes allow custom text to be added also. For example, the /AFK command can be customized with your own message.
- Example: /afk I’m taking an important phone call and will be back shortly.
This customizing ability for the predefined Emotes is where the real power and beauty of the system is found. By using various animated &/or audio enabled Emotes and supplying your own text, you can express literally hundreds (if not thousands) of ideas.
- Here are a few examples:
- /talk recalls his brush with death… I was fishing near <a really good location> when I was nearly pulled into the water! When he broke the surface, I swear ;target, he was bigger than that 50 pound Salmon on your wall! (Use the /talk animation to tell your friend all about that huge Salmon that got away.)
- /dustoff nonchalantly brushes the dust from his exquisite (but aging) armor after felling the Goblin Chieftain. “All in a day’s work my friends.” (Use the /dustoff animation to appear completely unaffected by your near defeat.)
- Here are a few examples:
[edit] Non-Standard Situational Emotes
There are a few predefined Emotes that don’t require using either the Menu (even though they may be there) nor actually typing the /emote command. These are Automatic Emotes that occur whenever you type the text of the command into the chat window:
- Any typed text ending with a question mark, including a ? by itself, will emote the /shrug animation.
- Typing lol into say (anywhere in the sentence) will cause you to emote the /laugh animation and audio.
- Typing bye by itself or at the end of a sentence (with no punctuation) will emote the /wave animation.
- Typing cry by itself or at the end of a sentence (with no punctuation) will emote the /cry animation and audio.
There are also a few Idle Emotes. These require nothing from you… literally. While standing around chatting, looking at items in your inventory, or some other activity that leaves your character standing idly by, you will begin to perform these Idle Emotes, and your pet will too (but not while in water). These include:
- Crossing your arms over your chest.
- Scratching your arm or your leg.
- Tapping your toe.
- Looking around.
- /Ahem – clearing your throat.
The following actions, while not always emotes, have had animation or audio added to them, and could possibly be used along with emotes by really creative players (I haven’t had time to experiment with these yet):
- Eating food (Au)
- Drinking beer (Au)
- Drinking curing potions (Au)
- Using curing salves (Au)
- Racial ‘return to X’ skill (An) (reading a map)
[edit] Emote Tools
The following commands are not Emotes, but I am including them because of their strong connection to, or use of, emote messages and/or animations. Think of these as…
Emote Tools:
- /AFK (An) (P*) – Away From Keyboard – Quite a few things happen when you use the /afk emote:
- This puts the tag <AFK> above your head (prefixed to your name) to let others know that you are not sitting at your keyboard (or you just aren’t responding at the moment).
- You see the message ‘You are now AFK with the message, I am currently away from my keyboard..’
- The message ‘<your name> goes AFK.’ is shown to those around you.
- It will send a reply to any /tell to you – ‘I am currently away from my keyboard’. You can personalize your AFK message as noted above.
- You begin with the Idle Emote of crossing your arms across your chest for a moment.
- AFK is not on the Emote menu and must be typed.
- (P*) /AFK must be cancelled by typing /AFK again and you see the message ‘You are no longer AFK’. Other actions will not cancel the player-initiated AFK. Because of this, other Emotes can be used while the AFK is active.
- (Note that you will automatically go AFK if there is no mouse nor keyboard activity within a certain amount of time and will receive the message ‘You have been marked as being AFK due to inactivity'. In this case, (*) AFK is NOT persistent and any action (even a slight mouse movement) will cancel the AFK status and give you the message ‘You are no longer AFK’. During this type of AFK you will perform idle emotes.)
- /Alias – Used to create macros for your emotes (and other things). (See the section Using the /Alias & /Shortcut commands with Emotes: below for a guide on using this command)
- /Anon – Your character becomes anonymous. (usage: /anon )
- /Duel, /Spar – Used to fight another player if a challenge is accepted. Emotes are a great way to add some ‘character’ to a duel! (usage: /duel )
- /e, /em, /me, /emote – All are the same command and are used to begin an emote that is not defined in the lists below. (usage: /emote )
- /emotelist – Lists all of your currently available emotes. (This list is not in alphabetical order)
- /filter – Allows you to set the filters for a tab. Using this you can send your emotes to exactly where you want them to go. (usage: /filter ) (NOTE – This command is not working currently and returns the message ‘Unknown Command’, but the /filterlist command does still function.)
- /filterlist – Shows the list of filters which includes the emote filter.
- /Help – Do you really need an explanation? If you do, then you REALLY need /help! (usage: /help )
- /Localtime, /time – Gives your local time.
- /msg, /t, /tell, /w, /whisper - All are the same command and are used to send a private message to another player. (usage: /tell )
- /Music (P) - This is a special Emote (well, technically, its not an Emote at all). You don’t really perform an action or even say anything. But since you do perform actions once in-mode and playing your instrument, I decided to include it here. This puts you into the Music mode, allowing you to play a musical instrument using the music system of LOTRO which is quite impressive.
- You cannot enter this mode without a musical instrument equipped.
- This is not in the Emote list and must be typed.
- Entering the Music mode will interrupt persistent emotes like /sit and /liedown.
- You do not perform the Idle Emotes (animations) while in Music mode.
- For more on this, visit the Music System Forum under Gameplay which includes some great Guides and discussions.
- /r, /reply – Used to reply to a /tell (usage: /reply )
- /rp – Used to set the ‘Role Playing’ flag for your character. (usage: /rp )
- /rt, /retell – Used to retell a message (usage: /retell )
- /Servertime – Gives your server’s time.
- /Shortcut – Used to create shortcut buttons for use in the Quickslots… in our case, our emotes and/or aliases. (See the section Using the /Alias & /Shortcut commands with Emotes: below for a guide on using this command)
Chat Channels:
- /advice – ask for help and advice
- /emote – all emotes (good to use for testing when creating emotes)
- /F – Fellowship (if you are in one)
- /Help – Chat-related help (not an actual channel)
- /LFF – Looking for Fellowship
- /K – Kinship (if you are a member of one)
- /OOC – Out of Character
- /Officer, /o – Officer Channel of your Kinship/Tribe
- /RP, /rpc – Role Play
- /Raid, /ra – A Raid in which you are participating
- /Regional – Covers the entire region in which you currently occupy.
- /Say – Your immediate surroundings and the Default channel until you change it.
- /Tell, /t – Not really a channel but can be used in a shortcut or an alias to send a private message
- /Trade – Sell and buy
- /Tribe – Monster Kinship (if you are a member of one)
- /Uc1, /1 - User created chat channel
- /Uc2, /2 - User created chat channel
- /Uc3, /3 - User created chat channel
- /Uc4, /4 - User created chat channel
You will notice that within the filters for the Chat Window tabs there is an Emote filter. You can use this to send your emotes to a particular tab (i.e. a Roleplaying tab, a User Channel tab, or your Kinship/Fellowship tab) instead of sending them to the Main chat window tab, or if you don’t like emotes (please say it isn’t so!), you can turn them off altogether (you will still see the animations and hear them, you just won’t get the messages.) Used in conjunction with the Emotes output channel, you can do pretty much anything you want as far as where they go and who sees them.
Selections:
These are very useful when using ;target in an emote.
Note that if you have remapped these in your Options Panel, change accordingly!

[edit] Using the /Alias & /Shortcut commands with Emotes:
Now we will get into the more technical stuff (but not really difficult)… using the /Alias and /Shortcut commands. Using these two commands you will be able to:
- Save and use your custom emotes and customized predefined emotes as easily as typing a stock emote.
- Add emotes to your quickslots
- Send your emote to a specified chat channel while staying in your current channel
- String emotes together and then put them on a single quickslot. One click on a button and a whole series of emotes and messages can be used.
- By going to the Options Panel, Key Mapping, Quickslots, you can assign a key or combination of keys to your new shortcuts.
Notes:
- Any button created using either /shortcut or /alias shortcut can be moved to another quickslot location by dragging it from its created slot to any other quickslot, just like any other quickslot icon.
- To remove any created button from the quickslot bar, simply drag it to the world and drop it (exactly like when you destroy an item). When you do this, a button created with the /shortcut command is gone and must be recreated from scratch if you want to use it again. Even though a mouseover shows the button as ALIAS: <your text> (I call these pseudo-aliases) it is not recorded in the /alias list. On the other hand, a button that is created with the /alias command is not lost. The alias is still available as a typed command using the ;<aliasname> in the chat input bar, and can be put back onto a quickslot. To completely erase an alias, you use the </alias remove> command (or </alias clear> command to remove them all).

/Shortcut Rules & Notes:
- The easiest and quickest way to make use of the /shortcut command is to simply add the standard, predefined emotes that you use frequently to a quickslot location. To do this, on the chat input line, type /shortcut <the slot number using the quickslots table above> <your emote>.
- Example: /shortcut 61 /wave will put a button on your 5th quickslot row at the first position with the name /WAV. If you mouse over the button, you will see ALIAS: /WAVE. Clicking the button will cause you to perform the /wave emote along with the associated output message.
- You can customize the text of the emotes too using just the /shortcut command, but the name of the button will be only the first 4 letters of the text string…
- Example: /shortcut 62 /wave waves vigorously to ;target will cause you to perform the /wave animation but the output text will be ‘<your name> waves vigorously to <target name>’ instead of the standard /wave text of ‘You wave to <target name>’ or ‘You wave to everyone’ with no one targeted. The button, though will have the same name as the shortcut in the first example so the only way to differentiate between the two is with the mouseover.
- You can also add any text you wish using the same syntax, but when not using the /alias command to give it a shortened name, the button will again only display the first 4 characters of the sentence…
- Example: /shortcut 63 Good evening everyone! will put a button on your 5th quickslot row at the second position with the name Good. Mousing over it will show ALIAS: Good evening Everyone! And clicking the button will output to the Say channel (or whichever channel is your current default) ‘Good evening everyone!’
- You can have your shortcut go to any channel you want by adding the channel shortcut before your text (but NOT before an emote. For that we need the /alias command)…
- Example: /shortcut 64 /ooc Good evening everyone! will send your text to the OOC channel instead of your current channel and will name your button /OOC.

/Alias Usage -
- /alias ;<new alias string> <replacement string > - creates a new alias (same as /alias add)
- /alias add ;<new alias string> <replacement string> - creates a new alias (same as /alias)
- /alias remove ;<unwanted alias string> - deletes an alias from your alias list
- /alias list – shows all of your alias’ using two headings: Predefined Aliases (2 currently) and User Created Aliases
- /alias clear – deletes all of your aliases (same as /alias clearlist)
- /alias clearlist – deletes all of your aliases (same as /alias clear)
- /alias shortcut ;<alias string> <shortcut location> - adds an alias to a quickslot as a button
There are two predefined aliases:
- ;target - This is the one we are concerned with while doing our emotes.
- ;loc - Very useful but has nothing to do with the subject of this compendium.
/Alias Rules & Notes:
- An alias can contain simple text, chat commands, emote commands, or other aliases, but cannot be used to perform actions such as skills, traits, movement, combat, gathering resources, etc. There are a few exceptions -/invite, /follow, /friend add, & /ignore add, can be used in an /alias. When used with the ;target alias, this can save a lot of typing!
- No two aliases may have the same name. Each alias name must be unique (i.e. ;Hi, ;Hi1, ;Hi2)
- Try to keep your /alias’ name (alias string) as short as possible with 4 characters or less being the optimum since the name of the alias is displayed on the quickslot button. As mentioned above, long names will be truncated but will show completely upon a mouseover.
- Two commands cannot occupy the same alias even if the commands are in separate aliases which have been joined into one alias. The first command will always nullify the second and the nullified command will appear as text within the output.
- Any text added before or after an alias will be displayed with any text within the alias.
- When typing an alias that contains a chat command into the chat bar, any text added after the alias will be displayed along with the alias text, but text added before the alias will nullify the command within the alias.
- Example: You create an alias named ;afkf with the /f command inside to send your AFK message to your Fellowship ( /alias ;afkf /f I’ll be back shortly.). This will send ‘I’ll be back shortly.’ to your Fellowship channel. If you type ;afkf Don’t go away!, this will send ‘I’ll be back shortly. Don’t go away!’ to your Fellowship. But if you type Hey group, ;afkf Don’t go away!, the “Hey group” will nullify the /f command within the ;afkf alias and ‘Hey group, /f I’ll be back shortly. Don’t go away’ will be sent to your current default channel.
- When adding an alias to a shortcut and the alias includes ;target, do not have anything targeted or that particular target will be bound to the shortcut.
- If you use the ;target alias within another alias and have no target when using the alias, the message will display ‘;target’ as part of the text.
- Examples:
- /alias ;bow /bow bows respectfully before ;target will cause you to perform the /bow emote animation and display ‘<your name> bows respectfully before <target name>.’ (If you have no one targeted, the output will be ‘<your name> bows respectfully before ;target’)
- /alias shortcut ;bow <quickslot number> puts your ;bow alias on the quickslot number of your choice and the button will display ;BOW.

This section lists all Emotes and Moods which are available to everyone (Freeps that is... for Standard Creep Emotes see the Monster Emotes section below) from the very beginning of a character regardless of level, race, class, profession, or reputation.

- There are a total of 104 Standard Emotes
- Here is a breakdown of the standard emotes with animations, audio, persistance, and none:
- Animated - 83 (70 unique)
- Audio - 15 (10 unique)
- Persistant - 6 (/afk not included)

- All audio emotes also have an animation.
- 2 of the persistant emotes have both animation & audio while 4 have only animation.

- Because Moods are persistent, you can use other emotes while in a mood. This can lead to some pretty hilarious or very effective combinations.
- Mood Emotes put an expression on your face (mostly affecting the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth) befitting of that particular mood. This is the only animation associated with Moods.
- No Mood has an audio component.

[edit] Special Quest and Hidden Emotes & Titles
The following sections contain all of the known Emotes and Titles that you can unlock by completing various Quests, Deeds, or Events.
- Players receive a message with a description and trigger command when a new emote is granted.
- Quests that give emotes as rewards, such as the Spring & Summer Festival Dance Quests, show the emote you will receive in the quest display.
- Hidden emotes and titles will not appear in your Quest Journal. When the requirements are met, you receive the reward.
[edit] Festival Racial Dance Quest Emotes
Notes:
- These Dance Emotes can only be obtained during the Festival Events.
- Each Dance Emote quest is found at the corresponding race’s festival ground:
- Dwarf Quest in the Tunnel Tavern beneath Thorin’s Hall.
- Elf Quest at the Duillond Festival.
- Hobbit Quest at the Party Tree in Hobbitton.
- Man Quest at the Bree Festival Grounds north of Bree.
- Currently there are only two dance emotes for each race.
- These Dance Emote quests have a 20-minute interval between dances, and a 5-minute grace period from the time the NPC is activated (the ring appears) until the dance actually starts.
- You will fail the quest if you leave the dance area during the instructional sequence.
- You must have the NPC quest-giver targetted when the dance begins and throughout the dance or you will fail the quest.
- If you miss a step, or otherwise don't follow the NPC's instructions exactly, you will fail the quest.
- After the NPC makes the announcement that the dance is about to begin, he/she will begin to give a series of dances which you must then perform within a few seconds. The standard dance emotes are used (/dance1, /dance2, /dance3 - Note that /dance is NOT used). The easiest way to perform these, instead of typing each as it is used, is to make three basic shortcuts, one for each of the three dance emotes (see the /shortcut section above). After the dance has ended, when the NPC returns to the starting position, if you have completed the dance successfully, talk to him/her again and chose the emote that you want. The sequence for each dance quest is as follows:
- /dance1
- Take a breather
- /dance2, /dance3
- Take a breather
- /dance2, /dance2, /dance3
- Take a breather
- /dance3, /dance1, /dance3
- Congatulations! You have successfully completed the <race's name> dance!
- If you fail a dance quest, you will be given a cool-down timer which must expire before doing the dance again, but since each NPC gives the choice of either of two dance emotes, you can perform the dance quest again immediately if you don't have either of the two dances. In this case, you will still need to wait for the timer reset before attempting the quest again for the second dance emote.
- The Festival Quests for emotes and titles do show in your Quest Journal when you receive the quest from the starter NPC.
Racial Dance Emotes:

- The emote is given by Frago Sandheaver, Inn League Trader who is located in the Backroom of the Bird and Baby Inn in Michel Delving, Shire. He is only present in the room during Festivals.
- This emote is obtained as a barter item and requires 10 Summer Festival Tokens. This barter yeilds an Ancient Tome which is consumed on use and grants the /dance_jig emote. The Ancient Tome is not bound.

- Each required emote must be received a total of one-hundred (100) times (except as noted in the descriptions) to gain the bonus emote.
- Only five (5) received emotes (except as noted in the description) per twenty-four (24) hour period will count towards your total. All others above this daily limit are wasted. (Fun in truth, but still wasted as far as the bonus emotes are concerned.)
- Doing the math:
- 100 / 5 = 20 days minimum to receive one of these bonus emotes.
- 200 / 6 = 34 days minimum to receive this bonus emote.
- All deeds with a daily limit work the following way:
- Each day is real life, midnight to midnight Eastern Time (Note that this may have been changed to PST with Book 14 but I have not substantiated this as yet) as determined by the internal clock of your server.
- The reset occurs when you log out.
- If you, for example, log in at 11pm and get your limit for the day before midnight, then log out after midnight server time and log back in a few minutes later, you can immediately begin to get your limit for the next day. But after reaching your limit this time, you could not start another set until logging out after midnight again… coming back on on the second day of the example at 11pm and playing past midnight will NOT reset the timer. You would need to log out after midnight and log back in for the reset to occur.
- Advancing these deeds must be done while solo or in a Fellowship. With very few exceptions, you cannot advance any skill training, including emote title progress, in a raid.

Participatory Emotes are active skills which, when used, will cause those around you to perform the appropriate emote involuntarily.

- Champion’s “Boast” (lvl 40) - Elicits /cheer - Tales of your heroic acts draw cheers from the crowd.

[edit] The Ever-Present Emotes Wish List
(See. You thought I was kidding, didn’t ya? That really is its name! Ummm, up under the title… Geesh! Thought you were paying attention.)
There have been many emotes added over the life of the game thus far, and many have been upgraded to include new or better animation as well as audio. Bugs have been fixed, special Deed and Quest Emotes have been added, and Book 14 has added even more emote updates and Monster emotes. As rich and customizable as the LOTRO Emotes system is though, there is always room for improvement and enhancement. There are always a few ongoing threads in these forums asking for more emotes, and many very good suggestions for new emotes can usually be found within these threads.
That being said, the following is my list of emote system upgrades, tweaks, changes, and additions which are, in my opinion, the most essential. I have mostly concentrated on the system itself and the emotes that we already have, but I am also including a short list of emotes I’d like to see added. Many, if not all, have probably been requested before - in my original Compendium for example, which I posted last year shortly after LOTRO went live and which went into the dreaded Forums Incinerator during the house-cleaning late last year, my list covered over 150 suggested emotes! My current list is intentionally much shorter and contains only those that I think would benefit everyone and enhance Role-Playing. There are a few threads that have some great suggested emotes, and I have added links to those threads at the end of my list.

(I will expand on the explanations in the near future - I promise!)
- The ability to have more than one command in an alias or shortcut.
- Persistent emotes that allow 'stacking' with other emotes. (/sit & /smoke, /liedown & /whistle, /sit & /eat/drink, /flirt & /pose, etc.)
- Backgrounds &/or a list of icons for emote buttons.
- Animation for all predefined emotes that should have an action.
- More emote audios, especially for emotes such as /Roar, /Cheer, /Angry, /Clap, /Slap, /Smackhead, /Whistle, and /Yawn.
- More emote characteristics for Moods than just facial – i.e. /Mood_angry would include clenching and unclenching fists, /Mood_sad would include slumped shoulders, /Mood-mischievous would include rubbing your hands together…
- All Emotes broken down into Categories. These could be combined for brevity, or kept as is and emotes could be included in multiple categories.
- Standard Emotes – available to everyone.
- Racial Emotes – Specific emotes for each race including the Creep races (and a few specific to your homeland).
- Class Emotes – Specific emotes for each class (not the same as the current Participatory emotes).
- Level/Area Emotes – only obtainable at certain levels &/or from specific regions or towns.
- Artisan (Crafting) Emotes – restricted by profession/vocation.
- Hobby Emotes – Emotes specific to each hobby.
- Festival Emotes – only obtainable at Festivals.
- Special Event Emotes – Reward emotes from world events & special holidays/occurrences other than the Festivals.
- Reputation Deed Emotes – Hidden emotes acquired through social actions.
- Reputation Emote Titles – Hidden titles acquired through social actions.
- Standard Monster Emotes – Monster emotes the same as or similar to standard emotes, available to all monsters.
- Special Monster Infamy Emotes - Emotes exclusive to Creeps.
- Participatory Emotes – (Not the current emotes with this heading – see Involuntary Skill Emotes below) Emotes that allow interaction between players. An example would be /hug where if the recipient of the /hug accepts the emote (through pop-up window or by allowing in the Options panel) both participants would emote a common /hug. Others could be /handshake, /kiss (instead of just blowing a kiss), /pat, and /pick (that would be hilarious), to name just a few.
- InVoluntary Skill Emotes – for each class (not the same as Class emotes). These are currently referred to as Participatory Emotes and are class skills, which, when used, cause those around you to emote the proper response involuntarily.
- Weapon & Skill Emotes – Emote animations that allow showing and using your weapons and other implements, as well as emoting various combat skill manuevers without actually entering combat mode.
- ComBat Emotes – Emotes earned for combat prowess.

- /Weapon_cross-swords (An) W P – A weapon salute with another player.
- /Weapon_practice (An) – Allows the use of weapon skills in emotes. You would animate the combat movements but would not injure anyone/anything.
