When you talk to your Class Trainer to learn skills, be sure to check the Passive Skills tab at the top of the window. These are skills that allow you to wield additional types of weapons, wear more types of armour, and so forth. They generally become available at Levels 10, 15, 20 and/or 30.
Passive skills are “always on,” meaning they don’t have to be executed. An example of a passive skill is Lute Use which allows a character to equip and play a Lute. And combat types such as Evade Rank 1 which increases the chance to evade attacks in combat, or Melee Critical Rank 1, which increases the chance using melee to perform a critical hit on an enemy.
