[edit] Ancient Evil
In the First Age, in Angband, there were many creatures bred and twisted by darkness. In later Ages, the Dark Lord Sauron bred from these abominations new creatures with which to make war upon Middle-earth.
[edit] Beasts
Despite the many dangers which lurk in the dark corners of the woods and mountains, Middle-earth is not solely populated by evil beasts and monsters. In nearly every region, animals of a most natural order can be found roaming, going about their own business. Not all of these animals are harmless, however. There are many dangers which do not serve the Enemy in Mordor.
[edit] Creatures of Nature
The corruption and darkness of Mordor and Angmar have found their way even into the most desolate marshes. Beware the rustling in the brush.
[edit] Creatures of Special Note
These are a few of the many "named" creatures you may encounter on your travels through Middle-earth.
[edit] Dragon-kind
In the depths of time, the great race of dragons was bred by Morgoth in his dark realm of Angband. These terrible beasts are capable of spewing gouts of flame and crushing stone and metal with little effort. Few survived the fall of Beleriand, and fewer still remain in the Third Age. Smaug the Golden was the greatest of those who fled to Middle-earth.
[edit] Giant-kind
Little is known about this secretive race that dwells high atop the mountain passes and peaks of Middle-earth. Some would say their existence is merely the stuff of tales for children, but there are those who have explored less-inhabited lands and have witnessed the power of the giants first-hand.
[edit] Orc-kind
There are few tales more frightening in all of Eriador than those of the Orcs and Goblins that strike from the shadows against the Free Peoples of Middle-earth. Many believe these are simply tales of fancy, spun by storytellers to keep children safely within their homes at night for fear of being gobbled up in the darkness.
[edit] Race of Man
The majority of the Race of Men is on the side of good and are Free Peoples. However, there are some that for various reasons have fallen under the power of Sauron. A fighting force to bring darkness and desolation to the peaceful lands of Middle-earth.
[edit] Spiders and Insects
Spiders especially have a long history of animosity towards the Free Peoples of Middle-earth. In ages past, monstrous creatures of darkness and wrath descended from the great spider Ungoliant, a legendary source of the deepest and most sinister of shadows.
[edit] The Dead
Throughout the dark places of Middle-earth, there can be found terrifying, bodiless spirits bound to the physical world. These ghostly spirits are the shades of Men of times past. Like the oath-breakers roused by Aragorn on the Paths of the Dead, they are bound to Middle-earth by an ancient curse, doomed to remain forever on the fringes of the living world.
[edit] Troll-kind
Trolls have existed in Middle-earth for as long as even the most ancient and powerful Elf-lords can remember. Creatures of the most corrupted evil, trolls are as dim-witted as they are strong. Despite their size, strength, and power, however, most trolls do have a weakness: sunlight.
[edit] Unseen
The Nazgûl, as they are known by their ancient name, are the shadowy figures of nine ancient kings of Men, now enslaved to the One Ring and to the Dark Lord Sauron.
