Description
Physical Description:
Somewhat larger than most of his silvan kin and with a naturally stern countenance, Garaf often appears threatening regardless of his actual state of mind. Garaf goes forth garbed with function rather than form and always in grey. Elvish armor made of leather and cloth and often various small but effective implements including an old, black lute made of the dark wood from Mirkwood. Garaf has two weapons of particular note:
- Gilcarch (Star's Fang) - A bow that was given to him as a reward for some long-ago mission. The Gilcarch is made so that each arrow it fires lights up and blazes until it hits its target. In this way it is particularly effective in dark places like the Mirkwood.
- Fanaur (Lightning (lit. Cloud Fire), though this is probably an abbreviation of the full name) - A spear from one of the ancient kingdoms of Beleriand that has come down to Garaf through the generations of his bloodline. The Fanaur has a long line of runes stretching from the blade and twining around the haft all the way to the end. These supposedly tell some story in "ancient elven" but Garaf has never transcribed more than the first few words, from which the spear's name comes.
Personality Description:
Though a somber nature and stark appearance have often made it more difficult for Garaf to connect with others, once a connection is formed he remains steadfast in it. Solid and sturdy, he's known for his reliability and for pursuing a purpose relentlessly until its completion.
Garaf and his brother, Esslar, are nearly opposites in many aspects but they have a deep mutual affection for each other.
Gossip
- There was once a time when Garaf garbed himself in any and many various colors, but since the shadow has fallen over the Great Greenwood (Mirkwood) he has only worn grey.
- Garaf's parents have both gone, his father in battle and the mother into the West, but he has a brother, Esslar of Mirkwood, better known for scholarly pursuits than war.
- Rumor has it that Garaf returned from a recent ranging to find his brother gone from Thranduil's halls and so he has set out on his own to find him. This journey, chronicled in Brothers of Mirkwood, saw the two re-united in the Shire and the formation of the Randirim.
- As a warden and scout for King Thranduil, Garaf played a minor role in the events of the Quest of Erebor that were recorded in The Shadow of Erebor.
- Since coming west into Eriador, Garaf's names have become combined by some into Mithgaraf.
