About House of Elders

The House of Elders is a raiding kinship of skilled players who enjoy each others' company while running the hardest content in the game, with a few social events to spice it up. We consider ourselves semi-hardcore players.

Joining House of Elders

House of Elders is an active kinship that hosts 3+ events/raids a week. We are always looking for new members who actively enjoy LOTRO!

Although we don’t raid 7 days a week, we are not a casual kinship. We encourage members to actively participate in our forums and hope to see you in game several times a week in addition to events/raids.

House of Elders is proud of our reputation as a kinship, and we are looking for mature, friendly people whose reputation and outlook reflects ours. Please visit our How To Apply section for more details or to post an application.

Raiding and Events

We generally hold events/raid at least 3 days per week, starting at 8pm US Eastern time. Please make sure this fits your schedule before applying. Our standard raid days are typically Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday.

General Guidelines

  • Minimum level to attend Mines of Moria raids is level 58. Siege of Mirkwood is level 65.
  • A raid event lasts 3 hours on average.

Ventrilo

We use Ventrilo for instructions during raids. If you do not have Ventrilo installed, you won't be able to hear raid instructions, and thus won't be able to attend a raid. A microphone is strongly encouraged and required for some raids.

Standbys

If the raid is full, you have the option of getting full ep by acting as a standby. To act as a standby, you need to stay online during the raid, in the raid ventrilo channel, in a raid-ready state, available to be summoned if you are needed. We have these rules to ensure no one is taking advantage as a raid standby.

Alts

"Alt" characters are not required, but for those who have them we have a system in place that allows you to attend raids and win loot for your alts.

Loot

All major drops on the raid are assigned via out EPGP distribution system (see section below). Minor drops are looted by the officers and applied to the kinship bank.

EPGP

We use a modified DKP system, called EPGP, to award loot at raids. If you need more information on implementing our EPGP system for your own kinship, please view the instruction thread here.

The Basics

You're paid on an hourly basis for attending raids, with bonuses for being on time and staying until the end.

You are paid in Effort Points, EP for short. You are paid 70 points if you are ready when the raid begins (On time Bonus), 30 points for every hour in the raid, and 15 points if you are in the raid when the raid is ended by the raid leader (Completion bonus).

The more raids you attend, the more EP you earn.

Items that drop on the raid have a Gear Point value, GP for short. Better items are worth more.

If you want an item, send a tell to the officer who is announcing it to the raid. It doesn't matter how much EP you have earned, you can ask (and possibly get) any item.

The Details

We keep track of what you've earned, and divide it by what you spent. This is called your Priority Ratio or PR for short.

Note that we don't subtract the gp you spent from your earned ep. All we care about is the total amount of ep you have earned, and the total amount of gp you have spent on items. That forms the ratio.

People who have the highest PR ratio when asking for an item win the item. However, once they win that item, their ratio has been lowered, and they no longer have the high PR ratio they did before winning the item.

The amount you have spent, and the amount you have earned, both decay over time. At the start of raids on Tuesday and Thursday, all previous values are decayed by 10%. This means:

  • If you have a very high ratio (a lot of ep earned, not a lot spent) the system is decaying mostly earned ep, and little spent gp. The value, or "buying power" of your earned ep is not as strong as it originally was.
  • If you have a very low ratio (a lot of ep spent, close to what you have earned, or a ratio below 1) the system is decaying mostly spent gp. The value, or "buying power" of your earned ep is much more then someone with a high ratio, and so your pr gets higher, faster.

The Benefits

  • Allows you to save up for a special item you want, but does not let you develop such a lead that you always get the best items. If you have all earned EP and none spent, the system degrades more and more of your earned ep the longer you do not spend it.
  • Awards people asking for things right away. The longer you own an item from a raid, the sooner its value spent degrades.
  • Awards new people with a chance to get something good, regardless of how much the "veterans" have. When you are new, you have not spent any ep. After 4-5 raids you will be in the top 10 best PR ratios.
  • Encourages people to spend. If you ask for a lot of things, and develop a very low PR ratio, your spent ep degrades over time, which means your PR ratio will increase faster than those who have not spent as much as you.
  • Awards those who spend time raiding. It doesn't matter if it's a new boss, or an old boss, or whether or not the raid killed the boss: you are rewarded for the time you contributed raiding.

Code of Conduct

  • Member's actions on a personal level represent the kinship as a whole. Abusive language in public channels, spamming, or causing negative disruptions to other players is not permitted.
  • Members are not required, but are greatly encouraged, to participate in weekly kinship events and/or scheduled raiding and PvMP events.
  • If it is against the Terms of Service set forth by Turbine, it is also against our rules.

This list is notall-inclusive. Officers will use their best judgment on interpretation and action on these rules and/or others not included on this list.

History

Early History

House of Elders was created on March 31st, 2007, by Merlinian. Like many kinships around during the open beta/initial release of LOTRO, HoE had a large, constantly changing roster, as members came and went from LOTRO. At that time, the focus of House of Elders was helping one another out with quests, deeds, crafting, and the like. House of Elders' first event was hosted on April 1st, 2007. The kinship continued to run events on a weekly basis, alternating between PVE and PVP creep nights as members leveled up to 50. Merlinian decided to leave the game in May, and officially promoted Moxley to kinship leader on May 24th, 2007.

An initial focus for House of Elders was crafting. The kinship used the "Sword and Board"; an OSCommerce based shopping cart system to maintain the inventory and trading of items donated/distributed by the kin. The sword and board went live in May
of 2007. The online store kept an inventory and list of items in the kinship bank. To request an item(s), members would "purchase" the item(s) through the shopping cart, and the order would be fulfilled by the officers in the kin. By the time the Sword and Board was disabled in September of 2007, over 150 orders were processed by the sword and board, distributing almost 300 gold worth of materials, weapons, armor, etc. to the Kinship.

Initial Raiding

House of Elders' first raid was into Helegrod on June 26th, 2007. The goal was to finish the "fangs for nothing" quest so we could get everyone ancient explorers' packs.... When the raid was over all we had accomplished was beating the drummer event, and getting wiped by the 4. Ah, the good ole' days!

The first all-kinship clear of Carn Dum was completed on June 30th, 2007, and the first all-kinship kill of Udunion in Barad Gularan was a few weeks later on July 15th, 2007. In between those accomplishments, the kinship Knights of Dragons Past, lead by Linwe, merged with House of Elders July 1st, 2007. With a strong raid roster, House of Elders continued to raid Helegrod on a weekly basis, typically split into 2 days over the week. It was during this period that House of Elders found its identity: A raiding kinship for people who want to experience end-game content, but have a real life schedule.

The Famine

Starting around Mid August, 2007, House of Elders suffered a mass exodus of core members. Some bad luck, combined with members' real life schedule changes, left the active HoE raiding roster to fewer than 15 members. Thankfully the Evendim expansion was released, and the Annuminas 6-person instances offered a way for House of Elders to continue to raid on a regular basis. During this period the leadership of HoE changed again, Moxley promoted Mang to leader of House of Elders on September 2nd, 2007.

Progression

Rebuilding the roster was slow going, but House of Elders was able to return to Helegrod on October 10th, 2007. This was in part due to an influx of members from House Alcaradan, a kinship lead by Slik that merged with House of Elders on October 3rd, 2007. On November 19th, Silmarillion, lead by Lohengrin, merged with House of Elders, and provided HoE with a host of enthusiastic, professional players that helped form the new core of HoE.

On December 16th, 2007, House of Elders defeated Thrang, and on January 6th, 2008, the Balrog also fell to House of Elders. After completing the Rift event, HoE divided its time between farming the Rift and attempting to defeat Thorog in Helegrod. The work finally paid off on March 16th, 2008, when Thorog was defeated.

On June 22nd, 2008, a House of Elders 6 person fellowship was able to defeat the Balrog - a Gladden server first.

On January 22, 2009, House of Elders defeated the Watcher in the Water event in the Mines of Moria Expansion.

On April 22, 2009, House of Elders defeated the Nornúan (Giant Turtle) event in the Mines of Moria Expansion.

Server Events

On July 20th, 2008, House of Elders hosted the first annual "Miss Eriador" beauty pageant - a server wide event. The event featured 10 contestants, a band, a host, and a panel of judges from various Gladden kinships.

On August 25th, 2008, House of Elders hosted the first annual "Gladden Scavenger Hunt" - a serer wide event with about 100 players participating broken up into 30 teams. The event consisted of hearing and solving riddles from "riddle-masters" located in various places in Eriador, to progress to the final riddle and a choice of prizes from a prize pool.

Forum Changes

On November 16, 2008, House of Elders re-launched the House of Elders forum, using Simple Machine Forum software, along with new layouts and new features.

New Leadership and Charter

On May 12, 2009, The leader of House of Elders, Mang, announced that he was intending to step down as Leader. Since there was no obvious successor to the role, the kinship was asked to get involved in determining HoE's future governing structure.

The Majority of the Kinship voted to maintain the leader/officer structure in place, but add to it a charter that outlined guidelines that the new government would adhere to. The Charter was ratified on May 27th, 2009 by a 75% minimum approval requirement vote. The transfer of leadership from Mang to Linwe, the new elected leader of House of Elders, took place Wednesday, May 27th 2009 at an official ceremony.

Growth

Under Linwe's leadership, House of Elders worked to strengthen its raiding roster.  A merger with Epic resulted in House of Elders regularly running two weekly clears of Dar Narbugud.  Linwe decided to step down from leadership.  Erolas was promoted and continues to serve as the kin's leader.

The Mirkwood Expansion offered a new raiding challenge in December, 2009.  House of Elders quickly became the first kin on the Gladden server to beat Durchest in challenge mode and the Twins in challenge mode.  On April 27th, 2010, House of Elders became the first kin on Gladden to beat the challenge mode version of the Lieutenant.

House of Elders is regularly farming the Tower of Barad Guldur, Filikul, the Watcher and DN.

Now

Early November 2010, Linwe again became the leader of House of Elders.

As of December 2010, House of Elders began accepting Associate members into the kinship, members who can't raid or who don't care to raid but who wish to be a part of our social life, and who, like the rest of us, proudly carry the tag House of Elders.

House of Elders is currently focusing upon raiding Ost Dunhoth.
