[edit] Footnotes

1 arth- is uncertain. We assume here that it descends from *arath-, '(many) lords'. This assumption is certainly open to debate, but is supported by an old alternative name for this region, Dunhirion, the meaning of which we can state with much more certainty: '(Land) of the West-lords'. This rendering also makes sense in political as well as etymological terms: the realm of Arthedain was ruled by the direct descendants of the Kings of Arnor, who claimed suzerainty over their sister-states of Cardolan and Rhudaur.
