Elbereth in Lord of the Rings
- Elves often sought solace against the opression and despair of the shadow by calling out Varda's Sindarin name, 'O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!' as a light in the dark places. According to Aragorn, the name itself has the power to harm, or at least give pause, to the Nazgul. Legolas cried out her name at the passing of a Nazgul in flight, and both Frodo and Sam used it several times in their journey as a ward agianst the shadow, and as defense against the Wraithlords.
- Elbereth was the password Sam and Frodo used in the tower of Cirith Ungol, as they were certain no Orc would ever use the name.
Gilthoniel is Sindarin for 'star-kindler.'
