Monster play is Lord of the Rings Online's form of PvP (player versus player) fought in the area known as the Ettenmoors. It is commonly referred to as PvMP (player versus monster player) as one side is composed of freeps (free peoples) who have leveled their character to at least level 40, while the other side is composed of creeps (monsters) controlled by players that have at least reached level 10.

To participate in Monster Play you must have a character of at least level 10 and then go to the login screen and click the red "Monster Play" button. There you can choose one of the six available monsters to play as. All monsters start out as level 75, however they are significantly weaker than a normal level 75 character. The monster choices are Uruk Blackarrow, Orc Reaver, Spider Weaver, Uruk Warleader, Warg Stalker and Orc Defiler, a new creep class added in the Book 13 update. To participate on the freep side you need at least a level 40 character and just bring them to the Ettenmoors.

The Ettenmoors itself consists of the different areas of the Coldfells, the Steps of Gram, Hithlad, Hoardale, and Arador's End. There are also keeps and villages in each of these areas some of which can switch control between the freeps and creeps.

Gramsfoot- Gramsfoot is the starting location of all creeps within the Steps of Gram. It cannont be controlled or entered by the freeps and also has powerful archer guards present to help prevent the freeps from just waiting outside for creeps to come out.

Dar-Gazag- Dar-Gazag is also located in the Steps of Gram and can't be controlled by the freeps. However, it can be entered and the NPCs can be killed.

Lugazag- Lugazag is located in the Steps of Gram and is a controllable location. Control of this location also provides control of a nearby ressurection circle.

Hoarhallow- A hobbit village located in Hithlad, Hoarhallow is controlled by the freeps and cannot be taken. However, it can be entered and the NPCs can be killed.

Tol Ascernon- Tol Ascernon is located in the middle of the Ettenmoors in the Hoardale area. It is a controllable keep.

Grimwood Lumber Camp- A camp found in the Hithlad area, Grimwood Lumber Camp is a controllable location.

Isendeep Mine- The Isendeep Mine is found in Arador's End and is home of the powerful neutral NPC drakes which will attack both freeps and creeps. It is a controllable location.

Grothum- Grothum is located in Arador's End. It is a goblin village that is owned by the creeps and cannot be taken. However, it can be entered by the freeps and the NPCs can be killed.

Tirith Rhaw- Tirith Rhaw is located in the Coldfells. It is a controllable keep and control of Tirith Rhaw will also grant control of a nearby ressurection circle.

Ost Ringdyr- Ost Ringdyr is located in the Coldfells and is controlled by the freeps. It cannot be taken by the creeps but they may enter it and kill the NPCs inside.

Glan Vraig- Glan Vraig is located in the Coldfells and is controlled by the freeps. It is the location where the freeps enter the Ettenmoors. It cannot be taken by the creeps nor can the NPCs be killed. It also has powerful archers guarding it to help prevent camping.

Control of the different locations also opens up more PvE (player versus environment) related quests.
