First Person Usage & Wiki Articles

The article contains numerous refernces from the first person point of view:

  • "I've been working on this guide for awhile..."
  • "...just my opinion. In any case, I’d suggest..."
  • "For me, I primarily go dual-wielding..."

Those are just a few examples. If the article was something that would not be changed, with a sole author, that may be more appropriate.

Writing for this medium is challenging, but I'd recommend trying to keep in mind that others will be editing and contributing to the article. In that case, it's probably better to avoid the first person references.

To the original author: Thank you for taking the time to research and write this article. My suggestion is not meant to detract from your effort.

Stances

Something a lot of champions seem to forget (including this guide) is that "no stance" is also a valid "stance." You don't get any extra ICPR or automatic threat generation, but you do as much damage as ardour (that is, 100%), and you don't take any B/P/E penalties.

For some fights (ones where you're not worried about exhausting your power bar, but are worried about your morale--for example, a relatively short fight against targets that hit hard), no stance is perfectly legitimate. However, fervour is probably a better choice in most of these cases.

No stance also might be an acceptable alternative to glory for tanking, if you don't need the threat generation, and are willing to rely on your auto-attacks rather than try to regenerate power for spamming your skills. (For example, this might be a temporary situation in the middle of a long fight; rather than switch to glory from fervour or ardour, just drop stance. The threat management skills can be a help here. Also, Second Wind can be a big help in dealing with the power issue when going with no stance against multiple mobs.)

(Hesitated on editing for the reason cited about first person; just didn't feel right changing something with so many personal touches. Granted, I think this was taken from someone's forum post, where that sort of tone is appropriate.)

First Person in the Community Created Guide

I appreciate the review and suggestions Subbob and CU5. CU5 was correct, in that this was indeed a forum post. This started off as a collection of notes for my personal usage. Then upon seeing a few requests, it became a series of forum posts for select individuals to utilize. Shortly afterwards I had enough encouragement to copy it to the Champion's forums for a bit then, following numerous requests to publish it to Lorebook, it has since undergone quite a few more changes based on feedback received. The Lorebook certainly seemed to have a steeper learning curve but many new possibilities to tie-in.

Personal side-comments throughout the guide were included based on the feedback to provide personal recommendations. Additionally, it was my hope to further enlighten the reader by sharing my viewpoint based upon personal experiences. Of course, individual experiences may vary, and that's why this seemed appropriate to provide here where others could share their experiences as well. I tried to clarify within the Introduction, a disclaimer if you will, how the guide was based on personal experience/research/trial & error/etc but would hopefully be beneficial to other Champions out there as well. It is definitely open for other's to share their experiences as well. I would only ask that it be respectful (not a bickering contest).

Since the developers of this game would know the game best, I tried to provide links to their definitions of the information where possible but also to keep it separate from this player created guide which is based on player knowledge/experiences. Since this was created in the "Community Created Guides" section, I felt it was understood that these would be the author's work initially and the player-communities ability to correct mistakes or add their own information in as well. If I misunderstood this, I apologize.

Regarding the No Stance option, I only briefly mentioned it within one of my side-comments, and certainly not as detailed as the personal experience explanation in CU5's response. Within the Stances section, when referring to Fervour, I explained how I sometimes deactivate Fervour mode until the tank can regain aggro. In my experience, I admit I haven't tried the No Stance option very often other than for short and brief moments mainly due to the high power cost of our abilities. Please feel welcome to provide your experiences and suggestions within the guide -- the original intent has been to share lessons learned to other Champions. You are more than welcome to give credit to yourself for the contribution as well -- if an individual wants to know more about a comment, they know who to contact for further details or to thank for a great tip that could greatly improve their gameplay experience. Besides, it seems right to give credit to those who have contributed to make the guide better overall.

I'll work on clarifying the Introduction section to encourage the readers to share their School of Hard Knocks lessons. It certainly was not my intention to discourage participation or initiate a battle ground of viewpoints; however it has been based on lessons from Champions studying in The School of Hard Knocks and not based strictly upon the developers descriptions of the Champion class. The non-community sections of the Lorebook, I feel, are for those that just want a brief description of a stat/skill/class/etc -- my intent was for this guide to express this from the character's true-experience perspective.

Author's Note

This guide has not yet been revised to reflect the changes in the Mines of Moria. As I've had less and less game-time as my Champion, this guide would benefit greatly from updates from our fellow Champions in the community. I'll still try to keep this updated as I get a chance, but any assistance is, as always, greatly appreciated

SoM Overhaul

I am currently in the process of overhauling the guide for the current state of the game and attempting to add additional information.  As part of this process, I am removing the personal referrents where possible.  If you see a section that has been edited and still contains considerable personal pronoun use, please let me know.
