Bio
Haycarl was raised in the little town of Overhill. As most hobbits of this community, he turned forester, the Bindbole wood being the raw resource of Overhill’s economy. His youth was spent in the woods where he sought honey and berries more than premium lumber as he should have… He always had a knack for hiding from and dodging the huge bears that populate the Bindbole, not to mention the lumber yard’s foreman too.
His pleasures where very simple and hobbit-worthy : food and drink. Overhill being a quiet town, even by hobbit standards, Haycarl used to make a trip to the Plough’n Stars, in Brockenborings, when he could. He would relish in the tall tales of travelers coming and going through this larger settlement. He even found the farmers’ stories of how they managed to protect their herds from the wolves thrilling. There was something about protecting your defenceless flock against a sneaky enemy he found noble…
Some evening, coming back from the tavern, he was set upon by goblins who surprised him at the bridge. He was bagged and transported to some dark craggy place. The goblins had their fun with him sticking him with their spears as the drums beat faster and faster. He was then brought before a huge standing stone which glowed eerily. Weakened by the loss of blood and terrorized, he lost consciousness. He woke up back at the Plough’n Stars, in the common room, before a warm fire. The wounds to his body had been tended but he would never be the same afterwards…
Haycarl isn’t sure if he made it out on his own or if he was rescued, but he would eventually like to know who brought him back to safety. Although Halson, the Inn-keep, nervously says he has no idea who brought him back and Doc Bolger swears he’s not the one who mended him wounds, Haycarl suspects they know more.
Since then he has wandered the woods, promising himself that HE would be the one to surprise goblins from now on. The bounders of the Shire welcomed him. The farmers and their wolves… now it was Haycarl and the orc-kind.
Meeting the Green Company: How he came to mingle with Rangers? Haycarl’s mission has taken him further and further beyond the bounds of the Shire. The goblins came from the North so he pushed in that direction. Beyond Oathbarton to Evendim and across Brandy Hills to the North Downs he travelled. There he had his first contact with the Rangers of the North. When these men found the determined hobbit deep in an orc camp, slicing at the bindings of an orcish war machine surrounded by oblivious uruks, they understood there was something different about this Halfling.
The men never included Haycarl as one of their own, but knew enough to recognize the value of the information he brought back when he returned from his forays. They even followed him once or twice to see how he managed… losing him a few times as he was a match for their tracking skills. They then entrusted him with missives and observation missions once in a while, when they met. Haycarl came to appreciate working alongside these men who took the orcish threat as personally as he did. Something he has yet to find in Shire-folk.
Coming back to his old haunts, he managed to notice men, similar to those he dealt with in the North, roaming the woods between the Greenfields and The Hill. He followed them, until he was discovered. He’d just met the Green Cloaks…
RP Fodder
- 10-27-08: * Haycarl still doesn’t know for sure what happened that night the goblins took him… * He has a hard time understanding why some men act like orcs, killing and pillaging from their own kind. He thinks they are easily corrupted and that even the best might go bad. * He is also hopeful that someday the hobbits will wake-up and do their part as they did in Bullroarer’s time. “Greenfields forever and trounce the gobos!"
Friends and Enemies
Friends:
- Until now, Haycarl has mostly been a loner. This doesn't mean that he's not likable, but just that he has a hard time finding someone who doesn't think it weird that a hobbit might be obsessed with protecting the Shire from the uruks and that he's actually doing something about it...
Enemies:
- He has some issues with goblins...
