Description

Physical Description: Beautiful and deadly is a good way to describe Jarys. Her eyes are a striking shade of sapphire blue (rare amongst Southrons), and her skin quite dark compared to the average Bree-lander. She is fit and usually wears tight but easy to move in clothing and a hooded cloak. Her appearance has saved her life several times, and has also become her greatest tool of manipulation...

Personality Description: Jarys is a very clever and complicated actress, and rarely can you take what comes out of her mouth at face value. When she's not putting on the guise of a gentle messenger, a saucy temptress, or victimized damsel, she's vulgar, curt, and undyingly cynical. In the presence of anyone she can identify as Gondorian, she has no qualms about using the word "nekhmat", a racial slur used by Haradrim for the hated descendents of Numenor ((made up! Not lore!)). She swears frequently, and can be very insulting and arrogant. She's also a master of using her feminine wiles to manipulate men.

Accent: She uses a South Gondorian accent (likened to soft, low-British), which makes her origin difficult to identify for those who are not familiar with Harad. Her voice can either drip with honey or stab like daggers.

Bio

Very little is known about Jarys' history other than the clear fact she is a Southron of multiple skills. Members of the Gondorian military or Rangers she has dealt with have suspected she may have had ties with the Hasharin assassins of Harad, as she has many of their traits and skills. She's a dangerously clever assassin, and has also built quite a livelihood as a thief. While she's only been confronted once (an incident she escaped by the use of burglar's dust which she always carries), she's picked many a pocket in the Prancing Pony and tends to do so by wooing unsuspecting males into buying her drinks and starting up conversations. She's an extremely dangerous and dirty fighter, and her ability to escape and manipulate cannot be underestimated.

A few months after her arrival in Bree-land, she was caught attempting to pick the pocket of Jaco, the self-proclaimed "Best Burglar in Middle Earth". Noting her skill, Jaco recruited her into his gang of "Perfectly Trustworthy Individuals", along with several other rogues (Hanson of Bree-land, Aedynferth, and Acwel of Dale). Jarys stuck with this 'gig' as long as it was profitable, though expressed later that her reasons for travelling to Eriador included a 'bigger fish to fry' that she had in mind.

Jaco quickly learned of Jarys' nasty side when he had her, Hanson, and Aedynferth ambush The Green Company. Supposedly, Jaco had kidnapped their Captain, Ardra... Jarys chose a Gondorian, Corinthil "Grey-Eyes", as the target of her blade and immediately made an enemy. She also found a worthy opponent in the form of the Elf Amonthir of Lorien, who kept her from killing the Gondorian despite Jaco's orders.

Eventually, Hanson presented an offer that proved to be far more lucrative than staying with Jaco... Betraying him. Jarys aided in a plot to hand Jaco over to The Green Company, with the goal of tracking down Jaco's hidden 'stash', as well as claiming Ardra of the Dunedain as their own prisoner and demanding a ransom...

Upon learning that Ardra was in fact a Gondorian, however, Jarys had to use substantial restraint to not harm her beyond what Hanson wished for the purposes of interrogation. Before she could take matters into her own hand, Hanson banned her from even being in the same room as Ardra. Jarys set to work using the 'clues' Jaco had left behind to track down his stash, and played little part in the interrogation or Hanson's absurd schemes to trick the Rangers and sell any extracted information to Angmar. Eventually, they were all played by Acwel of Dale who got greedy eventually, and tried to collect the ransom himself (his poor planning allowed Ardra to escape and be rescued, and his poor interpretation of Jaco's clues got him killed in the ruins of Forochel).

With the ransom lost, Jarys set to work on other enterprises, including the kidnapping of the well-known minstrel, Alanar of Gondor, who fell for her wiles and ended up tied up in the ruins near the Starmere. She attempted to track down Jaco's stash, though all she found was a green flower pressed between two panes of glass. She had successfully evaded the Rangers until that point (she's known for muddling and covering her tracks very well), but in her fury, she made a key tactical error and swam without waterproofing her burglar's dust. When she arrived at her camp, The Green Company was waiting and she was unable to escape.

She was kept prisoner in the house of Bason Borionson (another Gondorian, one with an intense disdain for anyone similar to a Corsair) for many weeks, and her stay with the Rangers was unpleasant for both parties. Even with information she didn't care about giving, she was extremely uncooperative, and while the Rangers never resorted to the brutal tactics Hanson used on Ardra, they did deny her food several times and leave her tied to the corner post of a bed for many days (the knots were done by Amonthir, who is known for his unusual skill with tying things and people up). She did have a bit of fun, and nearly escaped when Bason left a friend, Bregum (a rogue of sorts in his own way) to guard the Haradrim woman. She played him like a drum, and when the Rangers arrived, they found her unbound, sitting on Bregum's bare back giving him a massage... Needless to say, Aminth appointed only female and Gondorian guards from that time on. Jarys was also visited several times by Amonthir, who used an entirely different set of tactics to get information out of her: kindness. It worked, and the Southron woman even indulged him enough to teach him some of her language.

Several key events occurred that led to Jarys being transferred to Esteldin... Aminth called upon the aid of Eloceen, an intuitive Elf of Lindon who was quite skilled in telling truth from lie. She inspired quite intense rage from Jarys, and drew a fair deal of information from her. Eventually the individual who broke Jarys was Scorric of Rohan, who hammered her with pointed questions until she revealed everything she knew of Hanson's plan, Ardra's interrogation, and also claimed that her kidnapping of Alanar had to do with a well-planned out ransom attempt (saying his father is a Gondorian General). Jarys had one ace in her pocket, though: Vyktor Athnun, a Lore-Master who the company had brought in for questioning when he witnessed the death of Hanson and Jaco. Thanks to a few poorly chosen words and moves made by the Rangers, Jarys was able to sell the naive lore-master on the idea she was a brutalized prisoner, a beautiful woman being treated like a dog by wild-vigilantes. She moaned, screamed, begged, and wailed to convince the man she required assistance, and he took the bait hook, line, and sinker. He insisted on following the Rangers all the way to Esteldin when she was transferred, and tried to report the Rangers to the 'government' (non-existant though it is) of Bree.

It has not been explained how this happened, but for reasons all his own, Alanar convinced Vyktor that Jarys was his betrothed, and manipulated the Lore-Master's misguided sense of justice to help Jarys escape from Esteldin. They dressed as Rangers of the Green Company, but upon arriving at the location Jarys was being held, they discovered she was already in the process of her own escape (having patiently undone every single knot behind her back using a fork she's stolen from Aminth of Lorien). She was appalled to learn of Alanar's 'claim', and after their successful escape, she arranged a meeting with Vyktor under the Trestlebridge. She thanked Vyktor from rescuing her from the 'terrible wild-folk', and explained that Alanar had lied about being engaged to her... After which she kissed him. After a sordid adventure which lasted all night, Vyktor woke up the next day in his underwear, tied to a tree with his coinpurse emptied... and Jarys had well planned ahead that this was where the Greencloaks would be meeting the next day. Vyktor was captured, and Jarys hoped he would take the heat in her place (she underestimated the mercy of Captain Ardra).

What Jarys has been up to lately, The Ranger's can't tell, though she's made it clear in several different forms that she doesn't intend to be captured again...

RP Fodder

  • 10/11/08: Jarys has been a frustrating quarry for the Rangers of late. For one hunter, she left a bodice tied to a tree atop Amon Sul, with a saucy note written upon it. For another, she left a similar message. Allied with Vyktor, the Ranger Araran almost caught her north of the Forsaken Inn, though she evaded capture by diving over a waterfall (over which her pursuers surprisingly followed her!). Most recently, she was almost caught outside of the Prancing Pony by Corinthil Grey-Eyes... a frustrating complication in her financial enterprises.

Friends and Enemies

Friends:

  • Jarys has a bad habit of chewing up and spitting out any potential ally she may have. She's used to working alone, and will only do otherwise so long as its profitable to do so.
  • Amonthir of Lorien: Truly, Amonthir is the only associate of the Rangers that Jarys could almost call a friend (very, very loosely) due to his kind treatment of her during captivity. Of the members of the Green Company, this Elf is the only one Jarys would hesitate to harm... though that hesitation might not be enough to stop her.
  • Bregum: They had a good bit of fun during Jarys' captivity, and he's definitely an individual Jarys wouldn't hesitate to fool again, but Bregum was fortunate enough never to experience the Haradrim woman's nasty side.
  • Hyor aka "Gwareth": To call Hyor a friend is a bit loose. She had a complicated history (both romantic and otherwise) with the Easterling, and she has not necessarily made his life pleasant since they bumped into eachother in Bree.

Enemies:

  • The "Dashed-on-the-Rocks" Club: Jarys is a very cunning con-artist and pickpocket. One of her favorite tricks to gain quick income is in the manipulating of men. In some cases, this has been as simple as getting a poor gullible fellow to buy her a drink, then seizing whatever oppurtunity that comes to subtly pick his pocket. At other times, she's gotten into one night romances that ended with the disappearance of her chosen victim's coin-purses... and in her most brutal method, she'll actually give a man a night of sordid adventures ((FTB)) only for them to wake up half-naked and tied to a tree, bed, or other post with all their belongings missing. Jarys has affectionately come to call this group of misfortunate old flame "The Dashed on the Rocks Club".
  • Corinthil of Gondor: A Ranger of the Green Company better known as "Grey-Eyes", Corinthil has the most intense hatred of any of the Rangers for Jarys, and has had no qualms about expressing he'd rather see her dead... So far, he's proven one of her most worthy adversaries.
  • Aminth of Lorien: As someone who was involved in hurting Aminth's dear friend, Ardra, the Elf and the Southron are on less than ideal terms.
  • Alanar of Gondor: A self-proclaimed "Star" of the music world, Alanar is a bizarre mix of friend and enemy. He was manipulated and kidnapped by Jarys, supposedly for a ransom. The intricacies of this odd relationship are still unclear.
  • Bason Borionson of Gondor: Bason had the unpelasant task of guarding Jarys for a fair deal of time during her imprisonment. He managed to avoid her tarty remarks, deflecting them with decent skill, but this was likely done to curb his hatred for the woman. Bason was a Captain of Gondor whose entire unit was slaughtered by Corsairs... for this reason, Bason sees little difference between a Southron and the murderers of his men.
  • Jaco: The only solice Jarys has that Jaco cannot take revenge on her for betraying him is the knowledge he supposedly died tumbling over the Nen Harn falls.
  • Ardra Ruthanàkhàs of Gondor: While Jarys never had the opportunity to put her hands on Ardra, their interactions during the Dunedain Captain's imprisonment were far from pleasant.
  • Vyktor Athnun: Judging by the passion with which he sought revenge upon her, Jarys clearly cut Vyktor deep when she played him a fool. He followed her clear over a waterfall during one chase which she narrowly escaped. Because of this, Captain Ardra of the Green Company has gone out of her way to keep Vyktor from pursuing the Haradrim woman.

Trivia

  • Her most common method of thievery is to manipulate a man into bed with her, the next morning leaving him penniless and in his skivvies, tied up in the woods or a tavern room...
  • She's a very skilled pickpocket, and employs a great number of burglar's skills and tools. She also has the skills of a Southron Assassin.
  • Her past is extremely foggy, and the only indications Jarys have given have indicated she's exiled herself from her homeland, though her hatred of Gondorians remained.
  • She often claims that she's a Dale-Lander who has spent too much time in the sun...
