Bio

The folk of Bree and the surrounding villages speak of the elderly wise-woman Indreth, a fixture of local folklore for as long as anyone remembers. She is a witch (so it is said) who can converse with beasts, perform sorcery, and read the future in the shapes of clouds. She is, naturally, regarded with fear and is believed to be a bringer of disaster and bad luck. But also there are stories of her bringing aid to lost children in the forest, or giving advice to desperate travelers who find her cabin deep in the Far Chetwood.

Whatever stories may surround her, Indreth is a mortal woman -- elderly, though none can guess how old, and with no husband or children to speak of.

Previously content to mind her own strange business in the woods, Indreth has at last felt threatened by the half-orcs and Blackwood bandits who have become increasingly bold and numerous in the Chetwood. She can now be spotted walking here and there around the Bree country and beyond, and even in the villages of Bree itself (much to the unnerving of the local citizenry).

Friends and Enemies

Friends:

• Indreth seems to have a rapport with animals, and can speak with them -- at any rate, she certainly speaks to them, and acts as though she understands them in turn. Indeed, she shows a good deal more warmth and patience toward beasts and birds than she does to most people. One of her closest friends is a raven, whose name (according to her) is Caurach. He at least plainly understands her, for he is frequently seen flapping along by her side, bringing news in the croaking raven-speech. According to Indreth, Caurach used to be a wicked scoundrel -- "no better than a crow" -- until she set him on a straighter path.
