Description

Gnagerwine is a strange, small but fearsome-looking Man. At first glance, one might guess that he is in his late forties, but in truth, he was born only about thirty years before the War of the Ring. He has dark grey eyes and his hair is darker grey, almost black in all but bright daylight, and he rarely ventures forth without an obscuring hood or helm. His hair is short but scruffy, reminiscent of a beast's coarse fur. He usually has a short full beard, and he has recently trimmed it to better fit his new helmet.

His face has few wrinkles, but it is worn and heavily scarred. Gnagerwine is missing the top half of his left ear, his left pinky finger, and the tip of his right middle finger. The rest of his body, which is rarely exposed to others, also shows signs of quickly-treated injuries. Despite these wounds, his hearing is unaffected, and the injuries to his hands do not prevent him from being an excellent archer.

Biography

Gnagerwine claims to have been born in Mirkwood to a mother whose family was from Dale and a father, perhaps one of the Woodmen, about whom he says very little. There is no doubt that Gnagerwine is a Man, but he is certainly not a 'normal' Man, even by the standards of those brave soldiers and adventurers that willingly seek out danger in these times. His unkempt appearance, his hunched posture, his always-wary demeanor, and his vicious, no-holds-barred combat style show something very beast-like about him. No one can prove he has abilities a common Man could not train himself to have, but some of his companions swear that when he deeply immerses himself in combat, the whites of his eyes recede, until his eyes are dark like an animal's. It is also rumored that he can sabotage siege-engines with his teeth, and his remarkable senses and tracking ability cannot be disputed.

This half-wild personality results in one who makes a strong friend and a dangerous enemy. Under normal circumstances, he displays at least average intellect, and applies his hard-learned tactical expertise in combat. Although he might roar, hiss, and growl at his enemies, he can release an arrow as precisely and accurately as the most level-headed of archers. His mastery of the bow is indicative of his civilized side, and was passed down to him through his mother's family. In melee combat, Gnagerwine makes use of one short sword or dagger in each hand, wielding them well enough to defend himself and strike down a weakened enemy, but he is far less adept at close range against armed opponents.

Gnagerwine's morals and values have adapted well enough into mainstream society, but he also has a strange version of honor. The relationship between predator and prey is natural to him, he strives to be strong to be the former and not the latter. No fighting is two wild or dirty for him, he would bite his enemy to death if necessary. But he finds betrayal and overt disruption or twisting of nature to be abhorrent. He claims his highest duty is to protect his homeland, Mirkwood, but he knows that to keep Mirkwood safe he must do all he can to thwart the Dark Lord Sauron and his servants.

That duty has drawn upon his restless, inquisitive nature and led him far from home, into the pleasant wilds and the darkest corners of Eriador, into the depths and the heights of Khazad-dûm, the enchanted homes of the Elves, and recently, the wretched Ring of Isengard. And it has also caused him to save his most vicious nature for the forces of evil, at least for now, while aiding the Free Peoples. After all, Gnagerwine knows it is helpful to have allies, and the best way to make allies is to help others. Those he has allied with consider him a good Man, though undoubtedly strange. But wherever their loyalties lie, woe be to those who pervert or ravage nature, be it with necromancy or other dark arts, overhunting, or unchecked woodcutting, and attract this Man's attention. If he survives the War, Gnagerwine will make Mirkwood an even more dangerous place for the unwelcome intruder.

However, the War of the Ring has already claimed many lives. Even if Gnagerwine does survive, he will not be hale and vigorous for much longer. The short lifespan he apparently inherited from his father and the stress and trauma of war are quickly taking their toll on him. His greatest hope is to live to return to his home, restored to the lost Greenwood the Great of his ancestors, where he can live for another decade or two until he grows old and infirm and is devoured by the beasts of the forest, and dies knowing he has done his part.
