Biography

Jayd Greene: (nee: Applewood)

Jayd is the only child of the late Marbella Applewood of Bree-Land. She was orphaned at age 6, when the man named as her father--an outlaw leader of Blackwold Brigands--killed her mother in a fit of rage, then completely disowned her. Without kin to take her in, Jayd was forced to grow up alone on the cold, damp cobblestone streets of Bree-Town. Between the ages of 6 and 10, her days were spent just trying to survive; stealing ill-fitting clothing from washing lines hung between alleys; sleeping under a pile of crumbled brickwork in the Mud Gate area; scrounging food around the Crafting Hall, with its succulent aromas from the oven within; and begging spare change outside the Auction Hall, which was a bustling location for Bree's wealthy and well-to-do.

Sleeping in fitful dozes by day, by night young Jayd lurked in the shadows of Market Square, memorizing the patrol routes of Bree's ever-vigilant Watchers, then fishing a handful of copper coins from the Boar Fountain when their backs were turned. Not always the successful criminal, Jayd spent many a day inside the Bree-Town Jail, serving punishments for assorted petty crimes, and once, despite her tender age, was locked for two days and nights in the stocks on the Jail porch, after trying to steal from a counter box at the Bree-town Vault.

It was during this time and her frequent visits to the Jail, that Jayd first met Summer Swiftthistle, who was in-training to be a Watcher at the time. Although eight years older than Jayd, Summer was the closest thing Jayd had to a friend, until destiny took her away from young Jayd, too. [see Footnote #1]

Life on the streets of Bree was hard and unforgiving, but Jayd's strength of character and tenacity to survive overcame the harsh odds, until one day, those odds tipped in her favor. On a rainy gray afternoon, a stranger named Arthur Greene entered 10-year-old Jayd's life and forever changed it. Arthur (or 'Arty,' as Jayd affectionately calls him) was a pilgrim from Esteldin in the North Downs, visiting Bree's Town Hall on personal business with Mayor Graeme Tenderlarch. He inadvertently crossed paths with the fraught youngster outside The Prancing Pony. Several rounds of Blueberry Ale before making his return trip home made him appear an easy mark, but when Jayd attempted to pick the ample purse strapped to his rotund belly, having mistakenly interpreted the swell of Longbottom Leaf for a treasure cache of gold coins, Arty proved his sobriety and latched onto Jayd's arm.

Despite his initial outrage, the quietly spoken Mr. Greene quickly recognized the desperate, and almost feral child's plight. When a patrolling Watcher intervened, recognized Jayd from her previous offenses and offered to arrest her, Arty's next words forever changed Jayd's life. To her astonishment, Arty told the Watcher she was now in his custody, and promptly marched her back inside the Inn for a hearty, healthy, hot meal--the first Jayd had eaten in many a year. Suspicious at first, Jayd eventually warmed to Arty's sincere and understanding manner, for he was the first person since her late mother who had shown her any compassion at all. They talked quietly until the Late Watches, listening to the Bard's melancholy refrains from their seats by the cracking fire, and eating a cornucopia of the best foods to Inn had to offer, which briefly made it Jayd rethink her Pipeweed Versus Coin purse theory. That night, Jayd slipped into a contented, peaceful sleep at Arty's paternal, caring side--another first in her life, but certainly not the last.

The next day, Arty took Jayd home with him to Esteldin, where she lived under his roof and benefited from his tutelage until the age of 18. After coming of age, she took up with the Rangers of Esteldin, learning weapon and leadership skills, atoning for her past and juvenile crimes. There, she earned the respectable rank of Captain. Arty, who quickly became a father figure to Jayd, was reluctant to see 'his daughter' march into battle alone, and so insisted he accompany her wherever her adventures took her.

Although they have experienced much in their time together, today Jayd is still proud to have her surrogate father carrying her banner and constantly at her side.

Current Residence

When not called to arms, aiding her friends, exploring, or gathering materials for her chosen vocation, Jayd can be found visiting her good friend Summer's home at 2 Broadford Street in the neighborhood of Risemead, Bree-land Homesteads.

Miscellaneous Facts

  • Jayd has a crescent-shaped scar on her left cheekbone. It was inflicted by her mother's killer--her father, Brigand Sergeant Applewood--on the day her mother died. To her, it is a constant reminder of why she fights, and the source of her often pigheaded determination.

Footnotes

[1:] In later years, after Summer's return from Rohan to Bree, she and Jayd picked up their friendship, and, to this day, are very close.
